Sessions
The 2025 winter meeting will have two full days of plenary and parallel session on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th January.
As well as general scientific sessions, the meeting invites presentations and posters on the following themes:
- Kelp: studies related to the distribution and ecology of kelp species including commercial uses and contribution to ecosystem function (moderator – Dr Elisa Capuzzo).
- Estuarine algae: From freshwater to salt: taxonomy, ecology and ecosystem function of algal species in the changing estuarine environment, including restoration approaches (moderator – Prof Graham Underwood).
- Phytoplankton: New technologies, from single-cell analysis to ocean colour imaging spectrometers, have changed the research on phytoplankton dynamics and diversity in freshwater and marine environments in the last decades. In this session, we welcome all studies showing the scientific outputs of these new approaches, from in situ measurement to automatic data processing. (Moderator -Dr Veronique Creach).
- Freshwater algae: looking at all aspects of stream, river and lake algal research including eutrophication and clmate change impacts (Moderator – Prof. Suzanne McGowan).
- General phycology (Moderator – Prof. Rodney Forster)
- Irene Manton Prize – Awarded to the best postgraduate student presentation at the BPS’s annual scientific meeting.
BPS Awards
The British Phycological Society has set aside funds to support student projects, students attending the Society’s Annual Meeting and other meetings specifically concerned with algal biology, including non-award-bearing courses (for example at field centres) primarily concerned with algae.
